
How coaching can transform your life
Welcome back to my Mindset 101 Series! Throughout this series I will be sharing the fundamentals of mindset work. In this episode I’m going to explain:
- What a coach does
- Different approaches to coaching
- How working with a coach might be beneficial to you
At the most basic level, a coach is someone who helps a client achieve their desired goals. Different from therapists/psychologists/psychiatrists who mainly focus on healing past traumas for people who may struggle to be high-functioning in particular aspects of their lives, coaches are future-focused and help already high-functioning people transform and uplevel themselves and their lives to the next level.
There are all different types of coaches with different niches or specialties. There are also many different styles or methods of coaching as well as unique coaching tools or systems.
For example, some coaches take a more ACTION based approach to their coaching. This can be common especially in business coaching where a coach will give their clients lots of suggestions for how to do various things in order to grow a business (branding, marketing, sales strategies etc.)
For weight loss, which is what I specialize in, you could think of a personal trainer or a dietitian/nutritionist as a type of ACTION based coach. They will prescribe a workout routine or diet plan for you to follow in order to lose weight.
On the flip side, there are coaches like myself who take a MINDSET based approach to their coaching. Also referred to as Causal Coaching, a mindset coach is going to help you uncover and solve the root of your thinking that is causing your problem in the first place. I look at it as the difference between focusing on WHAT you eat vs. WHY you eat.
Across the last 6 episodes of this series, you’ve learned that there is a direct relationship between circumstances, thoughts/beliefs, emotions/feelings, actions, and results:

A mindset coach is going to help you become aware of, understand, and take responsibility/power over your current unintentional thoughts, emotions and actions and the results they’ve created. Then they will help you shift into creating an intentional and purposeful relationship between these elements that will create the new results you want.
This is why, in my opinion, a mindset coach is so much more effective than a coach who only focuses on recommending changes to your action. You can try and change what you are doing all you want, but as long as the original thoughts and emotions are still operating in the background and are out of alignment with the new action you are trying to take, it’s going to make creating a new result (and maintaining it) almost impossible.
With weight loss especially, we tend to rely on willpower to push ourselves into taking new action, (doing a new diet or workout.) However, willpower is not sustainable. It always dies out eventually, and when that happens, we will always default back to the deep rooted thoughts and beliefs of our original mindset that created your original results. This is why people get stuck in the yo-yo cycle with their weight so frequently.
In order to truly make permanent changes and create permanent new results, (or lose the weight for good,) you must start with making changes to the mindset.
In essence, I help my clients stop eating when they AREN’T hungry. We do this by coaching on these two processes:
- Minimize emotional eating by managing your emotions internally with your mindset instead of depending on food or other external things to feel better. (Coaching on your feelings)
- Minimize behavioral eating by identifying and shifting your unhelpful or non-serving thoughts & beliefs into ones that actually support weight loss. (Coaching on your thoughts)
Regardless of the type of goal you want to achieve or the transformation you want to have, you can go at it alone, or you can do it with the help, support, and expertise of a coach to accelerate the process.
