Do your results serve you?
Welcome back to my Mindset 101 Series! Throughout this series I will be sharing the fundamentals of mindset work. In this episode I’m going to help you:
- Understand how your results are created
- Determine whether the results you are creating serve you or not
- Learn what needs to change in order to create the results you really want!
Your results are all of the tangible things you have (or don’t have) in your life. Some examples are the job you have, how much money you have in the bank, the house you live in, how much you weigh, etc. Your results can also be the more intangible qualities of your life, who you are right now as a person, the relationships you have with yourself and with others, etc.
Most people believe their results are mostly a product of their circumstances (the external facts we don’t have direct control over.) However, if you’ve read the last several episodes of this series, you know this simply isn’t the case. All of your results are ultimately a product of your mindset, or way of thinking. Whatever thoughts/beliefs you have are always going to be reflected in your results, and vice-versa.
For example, if you believe, “weight loss is so hard, it’s impossible for me to lose weight,” you will end up producing the result of a really hard and difficult experience trying to lose weight. You’re likely going to spent a long time “trying” without losing many pounds.
If your belief about yourself is, “I’m not worthy of being loved unconditionally by a partner,” you have likely created the result of being in a relationship with someone who doesn’t love you unconditionally, or, you have the result of no romantic relationship at all. On top of that, you have also likely created the result of not loving yourself unconditionally. This is a great example for how our results can be both tangible and intangible.
Once you’ve identified a result in your life, it’s important to realize that you aren’t just stuck with this result forever. You can ask yourself the question, does this serve me and the goals I have for myself and my life, or doesn’t it? Before I started my journey into mindset work and personal development, it literally never struck me to ask this question, yet it has become one of the biggest transformational tools that I utilize on a daily basis.
Often we confuse the result of short term pleasure with results that actually serve our long term goals. It might feel really good to take action which creates a certain result in the moment, but when you look to the larger picture and see the overall net negative result you’ve created for yourself, you might rethink taking that action again.
For example, eating a sleeve of girl scout cookies might create a result of short term pleasure, but in the long run, you’ve overeaten, feel sick to your stomach, gone against your self-integrity in your pursuit to lose weight, and the scale heads in a direction that takes you farther from your goal.
Here’s the system for creating the results you really want:
- Question whether your current results are what you truly want for yourself and your life, knowing you have the power to change them
- Understand and take responsibility for the thoughts, emotions, and actions that have created your current result
- Decide on your desired future results that would serve you and your long term goals best
- Shift into what you’d have to be thinking, feeling, and doing in order to create the desired result in order to create it
When you take responsibility that the current results in your life are a product of your own thinking, as opposed to a product of circumstances outside of your control, you’ve empowered yourself to take ownership over shifting into creating the future results you’ve always wanted.
