What is your mindset and why does it matter?
Welcome to my Mindset 101 Series! Throughout this series I will be sharing the fundamentals of mindset work. In this episode I’m going to discuss:
- What does your “mindset” even refer to?
- Why is it important?
- Why is this something you should learn about or pay attention to?
- How is mindset actually real brain science and not a bunch of woo-woo?
Your mindset is your particular way of thinking. It is a collection of your beliefs and thoughts, (beliefs are just thoughts you’ve had repeatedly over time until they start to feel more like truth.)
Other words to describe “mindset” are:
- Mentality
- Perspective
- Headspace
- State or frame of mind
- Point of view
- Mental disposition
- Outlook
Why is your mindset important? Why is this something you should learn about or pay attention to? Your mindset establishes all your habitual attitudes or opinions that you then apply to all aspects of your life. It’s the foundation of how you operate as a human being in this world. I found this great explaination from JD Meier who said:
“Your mindset is your collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape your thought habits. And your thought habits affect how you think, what you feel, and what you do. Your mindset impacts how you make sense of the world, and how you make sense of you.”
JD Meier
Your mindset also impacts all the results you create for yourself and your life (or the lack thereof.)
Scientists believe we have an average of 60,000 thoughts per day. While some thoughts are unique, many are thoughts that show up as repeating patterns with similar themes. When you think the same/similar thoughts over and over, it strengthens neural pathways in your brain. These well established neural pathways translate to our autopilot or subconscious behaviors/habits. When you automatically operate without much awareness, it’s because you are defaulting to those engrained neural pathways. Repeated thought patterns make you fall into cycles of feeling, doing, and creating the same things over and over.
“An attitude is a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior.”
The Oxford Dictionary
When you don’t like how you feel, the things you do or don’t do, the ways you show up, how you react, or the results you’ve created, (all the things in your life that you have or don’t have – tangible or intangible,) the ONLY way to change those things is to get to the root of it all which IS YOUR MINDSET. The way you think affects everything about who you are and the way you live. You want to change something about yourself or your life, you have to start with your mindset.
Now most of us consider our mindset as “fixed”. We assume how we think, how we feel, and what we do is just our natural way of life that we can’t do much about. I’m here to tell you this simply is NOT true! You are not stuck with your initial beliefs, thoughts, or emotions. You have the power and capability to shift and manipulate your mindset in order to live exactly how you want to be living.
As a coach specializing in mindset work, I help my clients understand and shift thought patterns that are counter-productive to achieving their desired results, goals, or outcomes, (specifically, to lose weight.) When you learn how to break down old neural pathways in the brain and restructure your thought patterns and build up new pathways that serve you and your end goal better, you can start thinking differently, feeling differently, and acting differently in ways that align with creating different results in your life that you actually desire.
Your mindset is EVERYTHING, and it is the key to unlocking access to the life you’ve always wanted and the woman you’ve always dreamed of being!
